Introduction
Bundala National Park is Sri Lanka’s first Ramsar wetland and one of the island’s best birdwatching destinations - a mosaic of lagoons, salt pans, sand dunes, and thorny scrub that hosts more than 200+ resident and migratory bird species.
This curated birdwatching safari is designed for travellers who seek quiet, slow observation rather than a general wildlife chase. From flocks of greater flamingos painting the lagoons pink to raptors hunting over the marsh, this is a sanctuary where every turn reveals movement, colour, and life.
What to Expect
Your journey begins with a private pick-up from your hotel or at the park gates. Arriving early at Bundala is ideal; the wetlands come alive with morning light, and visibility is at its best.
Your private jeep enters the park with a birding-focused driver-tracker who moves quietly through the habitats most frequented by key species:
- Flamingos (seasonal: Oct–March)
- Painted storks, cormorants, egrets & herons
- Black-winged stilts, avocets, plovers & sandpipers
- Bee-eaters, kingfishers & drongos
- White-bellied sea eagles, brahminy kites & marsh harriers
Bundala also hosts non-avian wildlife such as crocodiles, spotted deer, monitor lizards, and occasionally elephants, but your safari remains centred on birds.
After completing the circuit through lagoons, dunes, and salt marshes, you will be comfortably transferred back to your hotel or to your safari starting point.
