Udawalawe National Park

Where elephants roam free across open plains and shimmering reservoirs.

About Udawalawe National Park

Stretching across wide grasslands and the tranquil Udawalawe Reservoir, Udawalawe is one of Sri Lanka’s most accessible and wildlife-rich parks. Known primarily for its wild Asian elephants, the park offers excellent visibility and consistently rewarding safari experiences.

Location: Southern Sri Lanka — a natural bridge between the hill country and the southern beaches.

Wildlife Highlights

  • 🐘 Asian Elephants — One of the best places in Sri Lanka to observe herds in the wild.
  • 🦅 Birdlife — Over 180 species recorded: raptors, waterbirds and colourful migrants.
  • 🐊 Reptiles & Mammals — Crocodiles, water buffalo, sambar deer, golden jackals and occasional leopards.

Best Time to Visit

Udawalawe is a year-round destination. For the most reliable wildlife viewing, the dry season (May–September) concentrates animals around water sources.

  • Dry Season (May–Sep): Best for elephant sightings and photography.
  • Wet Season (Oct–Jan): Lush scenery and good bird activity; fewer crowds.
  • Feb–Apr: Transitional months with active wildlife and comfortable conditions.

Getting There

Udawalawe’s central location makes it an easy addition to most Sri Lanka itineraries.

  • From Colombo: ~4 hours (approx. 165 km)
  • From Ella: ~2 hours (approx. 90 km)
  • From South Coast (Tangalle / Mirissa): ~2–3 hours
